Pattaya will spend 20.6 million baht to build a drainage tunnel along the railway-parallel road to mitigate flooding.

Mayor Anan Charoenchasri said the funds were allocated to the city as part of a larger project to upgrade the drainage system linking the East Pattaya roadway with Central and Beach roads.

Now, he said, the hard work begins, such as planning how long construction will run and what the impact on the environment will be.

City council members acknowledged roadwork will have a significant impact on traffic in East Pattaya, but said the long-term benefit the drainage pipeline will have on flooding is worth it.

The next step will be to take bids from contractors before setting a date for construction to begin.
