An Israeli tourist arrested on shoplifting charges denied he stole anything, but was unable to explain how a 690-baht hat ended up in his backpack.

Daniel Mesholam, 56, was apprehended by security guards while trying to leave the Mike Shopping Mall Dec. 16. Police said he was carrying a designer-brand cap in his pack that was reported missing from the mall’s second floor.

Sales clerk Sompong Eaimpinno, 52, said Mesholam had bought a 790-baht hat from his second-floor booth minutes before. Sompong went to make change and get a receipt and returned to find the Israeli gone. Alertly, Sompong checked the stock and found another hat missing and called security.

Mesholam denied all charges, but failed to explain why he had the stolen hat.
