A 1994 Muay Thai boxing champ now selling fake watches in Pattaya was arrested for allegedly stabbing a Russian tourist who refused his counterfeit wares.

Payu Daengsee, who won the Channel 7 boxing title 20 years ago as “Phet Namsaengkorsang”, turned himself in to police Jan. 12, a day after admittedly stabbing Ivan Cherkashin, 22, outside the Starbucks coffee shop around 9 p.m. at Central Festival Pattaya Beach.

A bleeding Cherkashin ran in from the outside-seating area and mall security took him to Pattaya Memorial Hospital for the stab wound to the ribs.

Cherkashin’s sister, Nadezhdn, 22, said they were having coffee when the watch vendor entered Starbuck’s fence-off seating area and tried to sell him “name brand” timepieces. Cherkashin, realizing they were fake, refused. The vendor persisted and things got heated, Nadezhdn Cherkashin said.

Police said Payu admitted to stabbing his prospective customer because he spoke rudely to him and claimed the Russian threw a chair at him.

The Trang native told police he threw the knife in the sea before later deciding to surrender.
