Drunk driver kills Thai woman and German tourist crossing Bangkok road

Police detained the 28-year-old driver after his MG sedan struck two women crossing Thong Lor Road, with a breath test recording alcohol at 145 milligrams per decilitre.

BANGKOK, Thailand – A 28-year-old driver has been charged with drunk driving causing death after his MG sedan struck two women crossing the road in Bangkok’s Thong Lor area early on October 3.

The crash happened at about 3:12 a.m. near the entrance to Soi Thong Lor 3 in Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana district. Police from Thong Lor Police Station were alerted to a vehicle hitting pedestrians, with two women seriously injured.



Rescue workers treated the victims at the scene before taking them to hospital. They were later identified as a 23-year-old Thai woman and 22-year-old German national Michelle. The driver, identified as a 28-year-old man, remained at the scene and identified himself as the driver of the grey MG HS PHEV involved in the crash. Police noticed signs that he may have been intoxicated and took him to Thong Lor Police Station while officers examined the scene and prepared a crime-scene map.


A breathalyser test recorded his blood-alcohol level at 145 milligrams per deciliter, above the legal limit. The Thai victim later died at Sukhumvit Hospital, while the German woman died at Samitivej Hospital, bringing the death toll to two. Investigators charged the driver with driving while intoxicated and causing the deaths of others. Police are continuing to gather evidence before proceeding with the case.
