Authorities are investigating the source of possible chemical contamination of Nongprue Canal after reports of strong smells and physical ailments.
Nongprue 2 Community President Prapai Nilbodee said May 18 he had contacted sub-district and Pattaya officials after people spotted a foamy substance on the top of the water off Soi Nongprue.
Neighbors said the suspected chemicals appeared after a recent storm and had a strong odor that caused some to have headaches and breathing problems.
Officials now are trying to trace the source of the contamination. Water samples were tested and showed an unknown chemical and less oxygen in the water.
The Nongprue canal carries runoff from Pong and Nong Plalai sub-districts and either one could have been the source of illegal dumping or a chemical overflow during heavy rain.
