PATHUM THANI, Thailand – More than 30 motorists brought their vehicles to Wat Sai Mai in Lam Luk Ka district, Pathum Thani, on October 31 for a traditional blessing ceremony conducted by Luang Pho Odd, the temple’s abbot and a well-known monk revered by devotees across Thailand.
Luang Pho Odd, whose formal title is Phra Khru Sophon Phattharawet, is particularly known for performing ceremonies to bless cars, motorcycles and other vehicles. Worshippers travel from different parts of the country seeking auspicious blessings before using their vehicles. The ceremony on Friday attracted more than 30 vehicles in a single day, reflecting the continued faith placed in the monk and the traditional belief that a blessing brings good fortune and protection to a vehicle and its owner.
Those wishing to take part are advised to prepare a set of three-colour cloths, five sheets of genuine gold leaf, a garland to hang in the vehicle and a donation according to their means. The temple also has blessing sets available, although visitors are encouraged to bring their own fresh-flower garlands.
Motorists are advised to arrive between approximately 12.45pm and 1.30pm, or check the temple’s schedule in advance, as ceremonies generally take place in the afternoon. According to local belief, second-hand cars should not have undergone a blessing ceremony previously if the new owner wishes to mark a fresh auspicious beginning.
Vehicle blessing ceremonies are a matter of faith and are regarded by devotees as a way to build confidence, provide encouragement and bring peace of mind. They also serve as a reminder that drivers must remain alert, avoid careless driving and follow traffic regulations to protect themselves and other road users. (TNA)
