How often should you bathe your cat?

A clean and well-groomed cat usually needs only occasional bathing, with the frequency depending on its coat, lifestyle, health and ability to groom itself.

PATTAYA, Thailand – New cat owners often wonder how often their cats should be bathed. While owners may worry about odour, dirt, fleas or germs, bathing too frequently can also cause stress and may remove natural oils from the skin and coat. Cats are naturally clean animals and spend a considerable amount of time grooming themselves. Their saliva contains natural enzymes that help remove dirt and reduce odours, so most healthy cats do not need frequent baths.

Recommended bathing frequency

  • Indoor cats: Once every one to two months, or every four to eight weeks, is generally sufficient.
  • Outdoor cats: Every two to four weeks, or whenever the coat becomes visibly dirty.
  • Short-haired cats: Usually once every one to two months.
  • Long-haired cats: Breeds such as Persians and Maine Coons may benefit from bathing every three to four weeks to help manage excess oils and reduce matting.

Factors that can change the bathing schedule

  1. Breed and coat type: Hairless cats such as Sphynxes generally need more frequent cleaning because their skin produces more oil. Weekly wiping or bathing may be appropriate.

  1. Health and skin problems: Cats with fungal infections, fleas or other skin conditions may require medicated baths prescribed by a veterinarian. In some cases, this may be once or twice a week for a limited period.

  1. Age and physical condition: Older or overweight cats may have difficulty grooming all parts of their bodies and may need additional help from their owners, such as wiping or occasional bathing.

  1. How dirty the cat becomes: If a cat gets covered in dirt, has faeces stuck to its fur or comes into contact with a chemical substance, it should be cleaned promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled bath. If a potentially harmful chemical is involved, veterinary advice should be sought.

For most healthy cats, bathing every one to two months is usually enough. The schedule should be adjusted according to the cat’s coat, lifestyle, grooming ability and health. Avoiding unnecessary baths can help preserve the skin’s natural oils and reduce the stress associated with frequent bathing.
