BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s new “Khon La Khrueng Plus” co-payment program saw a lively start on its first day (Oct 29), with more than 1.6 million people using their subsidies within the first six hours (6:00–11:00 a.m.), generating sales of over 350 million baht. Approximately 200,000 merchants benefited from the initiative, which allows the government to co-pay up to 200 baht per person per day for eligible purchases.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas said digital monitoring enables real-time tracking of spending by area, and early results suggest the program could boost the Thai economy more than expected, helping prevent a slowdown in Q4.
Plans for Phase 2 are underway to extend benefits to those who missed out in the first phase. The government also emphasized that any attempt to sell or exchange subsidy rights for cash will be strictly prosecuted, with full enforcement in coordination with law enforcement authorities.
Merchants still unable to register can do so through December 19, 2025, while additional training programs are being considered to help vendors reduce costs and improve sales, including AI-assisted solutions. (TNA)
