BANGKOK, May 28 – Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) in April reached 166.2, an increase of 0.54 per cent year-on-year, according to the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

OIE Deputy Director General Aphiwat Asamaporn said the MPI in April demonstrated the recovery of major industries such as electronics, electrical appliances and auto industries hit by last year’s flooding.

Major industries positively impacting the MPI in April were the automotive, petroleum, breweries, electrical appliances and air-conditioning industries.

The fast recovery of the auto industry contributed to the rising MPI in April and the overall manufacturing index turning positive for the first time after the crisis. However, the electronics and hard disk drive industries have not yet fully recovered.

Compared to the MPI of 192.90 in the previous month, the MPI in April shrank 13.84 per cent, a negative impact, resulting from decreasing production of hard disk drive, sugar and electronics components.

Looking into particular industries in April, the auto industry recorded production and sales growth of 83.12 per cent and 65.56 per cent respectively following last year’s drastic drop, caused by supply chain problems, an impact from Japan’s tsunami.

Production and sales of air conditioning units and components increased 13.8 per cent and 2.24 per cent respectively thanks to higher temperatures this year.
