BANGKOK, 21 June 2013 Information and Communication Technology Minister Woravat Auapinyakul has announced that his ministry is planning several measures to assist longan exporters.

Mr. Woravat explained that the measures include keeping satellite map database of longan plantations, improving the quality of sulfur dioxide fumigation rooms to prolong the longevity of fruit exports, improving the packaging system to cope with surplus output, and expansion of markets outside the country.

The ICT Minister said that longan is an economic cash crop and an important export earner. However, the export still lacks efficient overall management, especially for dried longan.

Meanwhile, a researcher at the National Science and Technology Development Office, Dr. Wichuda Dao, stated that her agency has developed a plastic wrap, called ‘Active Film’, that would help prolong the longevity of fruits and vegetables. The scientist said that the film would facilitate oxygen transferring, helping extend the product’s lifespan by 2-5 times.
