BANGKOK, 23 August 2012  – The Opposition Democrat Party has urged the government to come up with measures to shore up the falling rubber price, which has dropped from 140 baht a kilogram to just 76 baht a kilogram.

Democrat MP Chinnaworn Boonyakiat and 20 other MPs from the southern provinces with rubber plantation on Thursday travelled to the Government House to submit a letter to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, calling on the government to urgently assist rubber growers affected by the rubber price drop, which has caused damage to the planters to the tune of 150 billion baht.

The Opposition MPs suggested that the government buy rubber from growers at no less than 120 baht a kilogram.

Prime Minister Office Deputy Secretary General Dr. Prasit Chaiwirat was on hand to accept the letter on behalf of the Premier, which upset the Democrat MP, who said the Prime Minister was turning a blind eye to the plight of the people and vowed to question the her in the House.
