BANGKOK, 19 February 2012  – The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry is planning to set official standards for more farm products, in a move to make Thai agricultural and fishery produce more internationally recognized and accepted.

Agriculture Minister Theera Wongsamut said that the recent meeting of the Agricultural Product Standards Committee has resolved to approve the introduction of standards for 9 more products.

The standards set by the committee cover not only the quality of the products, but also their production process.

The agricultural and fishery products that were set with new standards are such as Gaba rice, eggs, oil palm, and Bivalves.

Mr. Theera stated that it is essential to make sure that Thai produce reach the hands of consumers in optimal quality, as these products are of high economic value for the country, like in the case of Bivalves, of which the annual export volume is around 12,000 tons and brings in revenue of THB1.1 billion each year.

He went on to say that the committee is set to introduce standards for more items this year, to help make Thai farm and fishery products more recognized and accepted in international markets.
