TRAT, Thailand – Koh Mak expects 30% increase in tourists during year-end high season

Koh Mak in Trat province is expecting a busy high season from December to January, with tourist arrivals forecast to increase by around 30% as improved ferry connections make travel between the eastern islands more convenient. Koh Mak Subdistrict Administrative Organization President Non Suwajananon said the island normally welcomes around 10,000 visitors per month, with numbers expected to rise significantly during the peak tourism period.

Improved transport services are a major factor behind the positive outlook. Boonsiri Ferry has introduced larger passenger vessels connecting Koh Mak with Koh Kood and Koh Chang, with approximately three daily departures. Additional express boat services are also making travel between the islands easier. Foreign visitors account for approximately 70–80% of tourists arriving on Koh Mak, with many choosing long stays of more than two weeks. The island’s peaceful atmosphere and natural surroundings continue to attract international visitors seeking extended holidays.

The local administration is also expanding tourism activities beyond marine and nature-based attractions, including Muay Thai and wellness centers offering physical recovery programs.

Koh Mak’s international recognition as one of the world’s 100 leading sustainable tourism destinations has further strengthened its appeal to Thai and international visitors. Regarding waste management, Non said the island currently has a systematic disposal and management system, with no complaints reported about waste-related problems.

Foreign visitors account for up to 80% of tourists on Trat’s Koh Mak, with many staying more than two weeks to enjoy its peaceful natural surroundings.
