Thailand’s Meteorological Department warns of flash floods, forest runoff and rough seas as rain continues across 36 provinces, including Chonburi and the Eastern region.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Meteorological Department has warned of continued rainfall across 36 provinces, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast in parts of the South and thunderstorms with isolated gusty winds expected in the Central and Eastern regions, including Bangkok and its surrounding areas.

Residents are advised to watch for flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in low-lying areas and on foothills near waterways, where accumulated rainfall could cause sudden flooding.

The weather is influenced by a low-pressure cell over the Andaman Sea, easterly winds covering Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand, and a high-pressure system bringing cooler air from China over upper Thailand and the South China Sea.

Southern Thailand faces the heaviest rain

On the eastern coast of the South, thunderstorms are forecast across 70% of the area, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Very heavy rain is possible in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon.

On the western coast, thunderstorms are also expected across 70% of the area, with heavy rain in Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi and Trang. Phuket could experience very heavy rain.

Eastern region and Bangkok remain at risk

The Eastern region, including Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat, is forecast to have thunderstorms across 40% of the area, with isolated gusty winds. Bangkok and surrounding provinces face similar conditions, with thunderstorms forecast across 40% of the area.

The Central region is expected to have thunderstorms across 30% of the area, with isolated gusty winds, particularly in Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram. The North and Northeast are forecast to have more isolated thunderstorms, affecting around 10% of each region.

Rough seas expected in stormy areas

Waves in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand could exceed two metres in areas experiencing thunderstorms. Mariners are advised to check routes, navigate with caution and avoid areas affected by storms. The forecast covers the 24 hours from 6pm on October 29 to 6pm on October 30.
