British Honorary Consul George Barrie urges expats in Thailand to prepare for emergencies by arranging suitable insurance, making a will and keeping emergency contact details up to date.

PATTAYA, Thailand – As expats living in Thailand, there are some things we should all do to prepare for illness or an accident. Thailand offers excellent hospital services, but treatment comes at a cost. Having comprehensive insurance can help ease the worry of “what if?”

There are many levels of accident and health insurance available in Thailand. Premiums vary depending on the extent of cover required and the age of the insured person. Consulting a reputable insurance company or agent, and seeking recommendations from friends, can help you find a policy suited to your needs.

A common situation, particularly among elderly expats, is that little or no preparation has been made for serious illness or death. This can leave loved ones facing difficult decisions and complicated procedures at an already distressing time.

So, what should we do to prepare?
For serious illness, seek legal advice about appointing a trusted person to act on your behalf and documenting your wishes concerning medical care. A reputable lawyer can explain the scope of a power of attorney, what decisions it can cover, and any separate arrangements needed for medical matters. Documents should be prepared in Thai and English so that everyone involved understands your intentions.

Many people understandably dislike thinking about their own mortality. However, without preparations in place, the death of an expat in Thailand can result in complicated procedures and lengthy delays.

Some expats have long-term partners in Thailand but are not legally married. Do not assume that a partner will automatically be recognised as next of kin or have authority to manage your affairs. If your next of kin lives overseas, contacting them and obtaining the necessary documents may also take time.

Making a will is an essential part of preparing. Seek advice from a reputable lawyer about arrangements for assets in Thailand and your home country, ensuring that any wills work together. Appoint a trusted executor and arrange appropriate Thai and English documentation.

Finally, check the emergency contact section of your passport and keep the details up to date. In the event of an accident, this information could help the authorities contact someone who knows you. A little preparation now can ease the burden on those you care about when they need help most.
