The Finance Ministry says online claims misrepresented IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva’s remarks, stressing that she discussed global borrowing costs and Thailand’s AI investment opportunities rather than singling out the country as economically vulnerable.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Ministry of Finance has dismissed claims circulating online that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, described Thailand’s economy as vulnerable while other ASEAN economies continued to grow. The ministry clarified that the information misrepresented her comments during a press briefing at the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings on October 14.

According to the ministry, Georgieva discussed global economic conditions, including the possibility that interest rates and borrowing costs could remain elevated for an extended period. She explained that rising borrowing costs in emerging economies were largely driven by higher global interest rates rather than increased financial risk. Relatively stable risk spreads suggested that investor perceptions of these economies had not substantially deteriorated.

The ministry also pointed to Georgieva’s assessment of Thailand’s economic opportunities, including closer integration with neighboring economies and expanding investment in artificial intelligence. She identified Thailand as one of the countries benefiting from increased AI investment while recognizing the importance of preparing for potential risks associated with technological development.

The Ministry of Finance said circulating claims distorted Georgieva’s remarks by presenting her observations on global financial conditions as a warning specifically about Thailand. The agency maintained that her comments addressed broader economic trends and potential growth opportunities for the country, rather than suggesting that Thailand was falling behind its ASEAN neighbors.
