Deputy Government Spokesperson Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn says inspections will focus on care standards, residents’ safety and rights following concerns over admissions without full consent.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Government Spokesperson Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn confirmed that the government has instructed the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) to enhance inspections of elderly and disability care centers nationwide. This action follows reports of elderly individuals being admitted to care facilities without full consent, raising concerns about their rights, welfare, and safety.

The ministry has instructed Provincial MSDHS teams to inspect care standards nationwide and ensure residents receive appropriate treatment in safe conditions, with their rights upheld.

Regarding a specific care center in Kanchanaburi, the spokesperson reported that 104 residents at the facility have completed initial screening. The Department of Health Service Support, in coordination with the Department of Mental Health, has deployed doctors and specialists to conduct comprehensive physical and mental health assessments before determining appropriate care for each person.

Kanchanaburi social development officials have assisted 25 elderly residents, including two from Kanchanaburi and 23 from other provinces. The remaining 79 residents, who are not classified as elderly, are undergoing mental health assessments to determine suitable support. The ministry has outlined three urgent measures. Individuals without family support will be temporarily placed in appropriate care facilities. Residents able to return home will be reunited with their families, with ongoing follow-up. Those whose families are in other provinces will be referred to the relevant provincial MSDHS offices for continued assistance.

The ministry also plans to strengthen mental health services in elderly and disability care facilities and coordinate with relevant agencies to increase personnel to meet the needs of Thailand’s aging society. The deputy spokesperson reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety, rights, and individual needs of the elderly and vulnerable, ensuring no one is neglected by the social protection system.
