Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn calls for coordinated flood and drought preparedness, urging provinces to ready evacuation centres, emergency supplies and equipment for rapid disaster response.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Authorities in all 14 southern provinces have been instructed to prepare contingency plans, evacuation centers, equipment, and personnel as heavy to very heavy rain is forecast across the region. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn issued the instructions during a flood and drought preparedness meeting on October 6.

Phiphat called for provinces and relevant agencies to coordinate rainfall and water information, clearly assign responsibilities, and prepare resources for rapid deployment. Provinces must identify evacuation centers and emergency vehicle parking areas, maintain essential supplies and backup sanitation facilities, and request additional machinery from the Transport Ministry or Armed Forces when necessary.

Deputy Interior Minister Worasit Liangprasit urged governors to promptly declare disaster-affected areas when legal criteria are met so assistance can proceed without delay. Authorities must also prepare food supplies and ensure communities receive clear information on evacuation points, vehicle parking locations, and other emergency arrangements.

The Thai Meteorological Department expects widespread rain across the South through October 13, with some areas receiving 50–100 millimeters during the early period. Rainfall is expected to increase again from October 10 to 12 as a monsoon trough extends across the region, raising the risk of flash floods and runoff, especially near mountain slopes and foothills as rain accumulates.
