PATTAYA, Thailand – Rough seas battered Pattaya’s coastline from late Thursday night into Friday morning after heavy rain and strong wind, prompting authorities to raise red flags and prohibit tourist boats from leaving shore. Strong winds and high waves continued along Pattaya Beach on September 25, forcing many beach operators to suspend services while tour boats were moved to sheltered areas along the shoreline and around Bali Hai Pier. Initial checks found six boats had sunk after being hit by the rough conditions, including one large tourist vessel and five speedboats. Two large parasailing boats used for tourist activities were also pushed onto the beach by the waves.
The Pattaya Marine Office warned boat operators and tourist vessels to exercise extreme caution and closely monitor weather and sea conditions. Operators were advised not to take boats offshore while strong winds and waves persist to reduce the risk of accidents and protect tourists and crews. The rough conditions follow several days of heavy rain affecting Pattaya and the wider eastern region. Authorities said the area should remain on alert for further rain and strong waves over the next three to four days. Tourists planning to take part in marine activities are advised to check weather and sea conditions before travelling and to follow instructions from marine authorities when red flags or other warnings are in place.
