BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has issued an alert for all 76 provinces and Bangkok to prepare for flash floods, forest runoff, landslides, and waterlogging as heavy rainfall is expected through September 20. Close surveillance is required in repeatedly flooded communities, along rivers and tributaries, and around medium- and small-sized reservoirs that exceed 80% capacity.
The Thai Meteorological Department expects heavy to very heavy rain in some areas from September 17 to 20, beginning in the North and Northeast before spreading to the Central, Eastern, and Southern regions from September 18. Bangkok faces a risk of urban flooding, while Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun are being monitored for strong waves and winds.
The DDPM has instructed provincial authorities, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and regional disaster centers to maintain 24-hour readiness, position personnel and equipment in high-risk areas, accelerate drainage, and prepare temporary shelters. Officials will also monitor caves, waterfalls, and other natural attractions. Andaman Sea waves are expected to reach 2-3 meters and exceed three meters during thunderstorms, with small boats advised to remain ashore from September 17 to 20.
Residents in vulnerable areas should move valuables to higher ground, prepare essential supplies, avoid fast-moving floodwater, and follow official warnings. People should also avoid risky natural areas during heavy rain and swimming during rough sea conditions.
