BANGKOK, Thailand – An 80-year-old woman has appeared before police to face charges after her Mercedes-Benz was filmed driving against traffic on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road, sparking widespread criticism on social media. The incident occurred on the inbound side of Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road near the Lat Phrao five-way intersection, with the vehicle reportedly travelling against traffic toward the Bang Khen intersection. The footage quickly circulated online, prompting questions about why the driver had entered the wrong side of the road.
Vibhavadi Police Station officers subsequently traced the vehicle’s registration and identified the driver as a woman aged about 80 who owns a restaurant business. Police summoned her to give a statement and acknowledge the charges at Vibhavadi Police Station at 3 p.m. on Sept. 8. About five to 10 minutes before the scheduled appointment, the woman arrived at the station accompanied by her daughter and went to the interrogation room to meet investigators. Police informed her of three charges, including careless driving, violating a traffic sign and another related traffic offence.
The woman did not bring the Mercedes-Benz involved in the incident to the police station.
Officers therefore instructed her to bring the vehicle to the station so it could be examined and used as evidence in the case. Police will consider the appropriate penalties and fines before submitting the case to court for further consideration and processing in accordance with the law. (TNA)
