PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya is preparing a new push to bring greater order to its beaches and Koh Larn while strengthening safety measures around tourist areas and schools. The city’s Working Committee on Administration and Public Order held its first meeting on Sept 4, chaired by Deputy Mayor Wuttisak Rermkitjakarn, to establish priorities under Pattaya’s development plan.
The committee was appointed by Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet to study problems, collect information and develop policies covering administration, public order and safety. A major focus of the meeting was the regulation of water-tourism operators at Pattaya and Jomtien beaches and on Koh Larn. Businesses and activities discussed included jet skis, parasailing boats, restaurant boats and Sea Walker operators.
The committee will also examine measures to prevent copycat behaviour following shooting incidents at educational institutions, as well as safety standards concerning cannabis cultivation.
Officials agreed to establish practical guidelines and a framework for bringing the various activities under better control.
The committee will meet again on Sept 7 to review progress and finalise policy options before officials move into the field to begin a more organised operation on Koh Larn. The meeting comes as Pattaya continues to face pressure to balance its role as a major international tourist destination with the need for stronger public safety, better regulation and orderly use of its beaches and islands.
