PATTAYA, Thailand – It is with profound sadness that the business and expatriate communities of Thailand mourn the passing of Graham Macdonald MBE, who died yesterday evening following a brave battle with cancer.
For more than three decades, Graham was a familiar, respected and much-loved figure in Thailand’s international business community. His career was marked not only by considerable professional achievement, but by an extraordinary willingness to give his time, experience and energy to the organisations and communities around him.
The British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) paid tribute to Graham as a long-standing member whose contribution to the organisation spanned almost three decades, describing his legacy as “huge” and highlighting his generosity, commitment, energy, character and ability to bring people together.
A driving force on the Eastern Seaboard
Perhaps Graham’s most enduring contribution was his work in establishing the BCCT’s presence on Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard.
Recognising in the late 1990s that the rapidly developing industrial region needed a strong international business network, Graham founded the BCCT Eastern Seaboard Group in 1997 and became its founding chairman.
At a time when the Eastern Seaboard was emerging as one of Thailand’s most important industrial and investment centres, Graham worked tirelessly to connect British businesses and expatriate professionals with opportunities in the region.
That early initiative laid the foundations for the active BCCT business community that exists across Pattaya, Chonburi and the wider Eastern Economic Corridor today.
Graham subsequently served on the main BCCT Board for 12 years, including as Vice Chairman from 2005 to 2010 and Chairman in 2010 and 2011. He was made an Honorary Member in 2012 and later became an Honorary Adviser, continuing to support the Chamber and its members, particularly on the Eastern Seaboard.
An MBE for service to British business
Graham’s contribution to British business interests in Thailand was recognised when he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2012 New Year Honours. The honour was awarded for “services to British business interests in Thailand.” He formally received the MBE at Buckingham Palace in May 2013.
Typically modest about the achievement, Graham credited the colleagues, friends and many people who had supported his work, rather than claiming the honour for himself.
Building businesses and bridges
Graham’s professional career was remarkably diverse. He came to Thailand in 1994, after an international career that included working in Australia and senior positions in sales and management. He later became co-founder and managing director of MBMG Group, helping build the financial advisory company into a respected regional business. The University of Bradford records that he had been based in Thailand for around 30 years and regarded his MBE as one of the major achievements of his career.
In 2016, Pattaya Mail reported that Graham had been named International Personality of the Year at the International Investment magazine’s International Fund & Product Awards. At the time, he was described as one of the outstanding figures in the international financial services industry, having spent more than two decades building MBMG and serving the business community. But Graham’s influence extended far beyond his own businesses.
He served as President and later Honorary Adviser of the South African-Thai Chamber of Commerce (SATCC). He took over as SATCC chairman in November 2012 and led the organisation until 2016, helping strengthen investment links between South Africa and Thailand. He was also a strong advocate of the developing Eastern Economic Corridor and worked to encourage South African companies to explore opportunities in the region. He subsequently returned as acting chairman of SATCC during a period of transition, serving until the end of 2022.
A life of service
Graham’s list of positions tells only part of the story. He served as a Director of the Board of Trade of Thailand, Chairman of Macallan Insurance Brokers, Chairman of MBMG Group, Adviser to the Secretary-General of the Eastern Economic Corridor Office of Thailand, Honorary Adviser to the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand, Honorary Adviser to SATCC and Honorary Adviser to Rugby School Thailand.
He was also closely associated with the Royal British Legion Chonburi, serving as its President, and was involved in numerous charitable and community initiatives. Charity was never simply another title on Graham’s CV. He gave his time and personal commitment to causes including Care for Kids, reflecting the same belief in community and service that characterised his professional life.
His connection with the Royal British Legion was also deeply rooted in the local community. Pattaya Mail records Graham participating in Legion activities in Chiang Mai and supporting the organisation’s work assisting people in need.
A man who brought people together
For those who knew Graham, however, his greatest legacy will not be measured by the positions he held, companies he helped build or honours he received. It will be measured in the people he helped.
Graham had a rare ability to move comfortably between business leaders, entrepreneurs, diplomats, professional advisers, charity workers and ordinary members of the community. He built relationships, opened doors and was always willing to offer advice or make an introduction.
His contribution to the Eastern Seaboard was particularly significant. The thriving network of international businesses, regular chamber events and professional relationships that now form such an important part of the region’s business landscape can trace part of their origins to the groundwork Graham undertook almost 30 years ago.
His work also helped strengthen the links between Thailand and Britain, Thailand and South Africa, and between the international business community and the rapidly developing Eastern Economic Corridor.
The South African-Thai Chamber of Commerce describes Graham as a strong proponent of the EEC who worked to bring South African investment and technical expertise into Thailand.
A lasting legacy
Graham Macdonald leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Thailand. He was a businessman, adviser, chamber leader, charity supporter and community figure. But above all, he was someone who believed in getting involved and making a difference.
The BCCT’s tribute perhaps captures his legacy best: Graham will be remembered not simply for the many positions he held, but for his generosity, commitment, energy, character and ability to bring people together. Those qualities made him much more than a successful businessman. They made him a valued friend and colleague to generations of people in Thailand’s international community. His passing will be deeply felt across Pattaya, the Eastern Seaboard and the wider business community.
