BANGKOK, Thailand – The government is using satellite and geospatial data to assess flood risks in Nan’s capital district, where GISTDA has produced a simulation showing potential inundation if the water level at Station N.1 reaches 201.50 meters above mean sea level. Deputy Government Spokesperson Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn reported on August 20 that the water level at Station N.1 in Nai Wiang subdistrict had already exceeded 200 meters. The model estimates potential flood depths from less than one meter to more than five meters, with deeper water concentrated near waterways, drainage channels, and low-lying riverbanks.


The simulation identifies roads, communities, schools, and hospitals to help authorities and residents assess vulnerable locations, plan evacuations, and determine which routes may become unsafe. The information can also guide decisions on moving people and property before conditions worsen. The technology is being developed under the government’s Digital Twin Thailand program to model potential disaster scenarios and support emergency planning. Authorities cautioned that the simulation does not mean every location shown will be flooded and advised residents to continue monitoring actual water levels and official warnings. (NNT)
