PATTAYA, Thailand — Pattaya city officials deployed municipal officers across the city on the evening of August 19 to monitor areas vulnerable to flooding and assist residents amid heavy rainfall in several locations. Officials from the Pattaya municipal enforcement team and Naklua municipal enforcement team were sent to key risk areas such as Moom Aroi Intersection on Third Road, South Pattaya Sukhumvit Road, railroad crossings, and East Pattaya residential Sois, to facilitate traffic, monitor water accumulation and provide assistance to members of the public.
Although the heavy rain eased within about an hour, officers remained on duty to monitor conditions and respond to any further water accumulation in flood-prone areas. The heavy rain comes amid a period of unsettled weather, with the southwest monsoon expected to remain strong through August 21, bringing the potential for further heavy rainfall in parts of Thailand.
Northern Thailand is expected to face greater flood risks, particularly from accumulated runoff from higher ground and rising rivers, with heavy rainfall potentially causing waterways and riverbanks to overflow in vulnerable areas. Residents living near rivers, low-lying areas and flood-prone communities are being urged to remain alert.
People planning to travel during this period are advised to exercise extra caution. Heavy rain can reduce visibility and leave roads slippery, potentially causing slower traffic, travel delays or, in more serious cases, vehicles losing control and sliding off the road. Motorists should reduce speed, leave extra distance between vehicles and check local road and weather conditions before setting out. Pattaya officials said personnel would continue monitoring risk areas and responding to situations as necessary to maintain public safety and ease the impact of heavy rainfall.
