BANGKOK, Thailand – Bangkok and surrounding areas recorded 18 rail service disruptions between May and July 2026, prompting Thailand’s Department of Rail Transport to call for more frequent infrastructure inspections and stronger preventive maintenance. The disruptions involved various systems, including five power-supply failures, two propulsion issues, two braking failures, two track-switching problems, two axle-counter failures and one signaling-system incident.

The Department of Rail Transport urged operators to increase inspection frequency to identify abnormalities earlier and maintain infrastructure in safe operating condition. Following an Airport Rail Link derailment at a maintenance facility that disrupted train operations, operators were also instructed to review their preventive maintenance plans and ensure sufficient equipment is available to recover derailed trains quickly.

Meanwhile, the department reported that the “Thai Helps Thai Plus” program has boosted average daily rail ridership. Compared with the period before the program began, passenger numbers increased by 4.20% in June and 6.59% in July. The program is scheduled to run through September 2026. The department also confirmed that all trains on Bangkok’s Pink and Yellow monorail lines have now received new guide wheel assemblies. The replacement program covered 42 Pink Line trains and 30 Yellow Line trains.
