CHIANG MAI, Thailand – “Chabad” serves as a dedicated sanctuary for Jewish people in Chiang Mai. Nestled behind high perimeters and locked gates, the facility has long left locals curious about the activities taking place inside. Situated in the heart of Chiang Mai’s Chang Khlan district, the center functions as a hub where Jewish community members gather for religious rites, communal dining, and social gatherings. The single-story, heavily fortified structure is surrounded by high fencing, under 24-hour security personnel and extensive CCTV coverage.
Surrounding shop owners and local residents note that the establishment has been present for over two decades. Every Friday, a substantial number of foreign visitors converge for religious rituals, under police monitoring to ensure public order. Yet, community members continue to question why—despite its dual purpose as a house of worship and a restaurant—local Thais are virtually never seen inside.
Mr. Yosef, manager of Chabad Chiang Mai and a Jewish spiritual leader, or “Rabbi,” maintained that the facility is open to individuals of all faiths and nationalities. He emphasized that the stringent security arrangements are strictly preventive measures for public safety, adding that the operations have fully complied with Thai laws for more than ten years. Originally located in the Night Bazaar area prior to its relocation to Chang Khlan Road, this remains the sole Chabad center in Chiang Mai, with sister locations operating in Mae Hong Son’s Pai district, Phuket and Bangkok.
Addressing recent allegations regarding nominee business practices in Phuket tied to the Chabad network, he stated he was aware of the reports only through news outlets and maintained no knowledge of any unlawful involvement. As the administrator of the Chiang Mai center, he holds a valid work permit, retains his Israeli citizenship, and consistently urges all visiting Israeli nationals to strictly adhere to Thai legal frameworks.
Meanwhile, most Israeli visitors at the center voiced strong appreciation for Chabad’s presence across Thailand’s major tourist destinations. They noted that beyond serving as a vibrant social hub, the facility provides meals that evoke a comforting sense of home. Chabad centers are established not only in Thailand but worldwide. Serving as dedicated spaces for worship, prayer, and scripture study, they also offer “Kosher” cuisine prepared in accordance with Jewish dietary guidelines, offering a familiar haven for Jewish travelers across the globe.
