PATTAYA, Thailand – The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the country over the next 24 hours, with risks of flash floods and forest runoff, especially in low-lying areas and near waterways. The warning covers the Northeast, East and South, where some areas are expected to experience very heavy rain due to a monsoon trough stretching across upper northern Thailand and the Northeast, combined with a relatively strong southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
Residents in areas vulnerable to flooding, particularly foothill communities, areas near streams and low-lying locations, are advised to remain alert for sudden flooding and accumulated rainfall.
The TMD also warned of strong waves in the upper Andaman Sea, with waves reaching 2–3 meters and exceeding 3 meters during thunderstorms. The lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand may see waves around 2 meters, with higher waves during storms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to remain ashore, while all vessels should exercise caution and avoid sailing through storm areas.
The East, including Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat, is expected to see widespread thunderstorms, with heavy rain in some areas and very heavy rain possible in parts of Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat. Southern provinces on the Andaman coast, including Ranong, Phang Nga and Phuket, are also forecast to face very heavy rainfall, with strong southwest winds and rough seas. Bangkok and surrounding provinces may experience thunderstorms across 70% of the area, with some locations facing heavy rainfall.
