PATTAYA, Thailand – While much of Thailand is bracing for heavy rain, flash floods and rough seas, Pattaya appears set to remain one of the brighter spots on the map, with sunshine expected to break through despite scattered showers. The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a 24-hour weather warning as a strengthening southwest monsoon, combined with a low-pressure system over northern Vietnam, brings heavy rain to parts of the North, Northeast, western Central region and the East.
Residents in affected areas are being urged to watch for flash floods, forest runoff and water accumulation, particularly near hillsides, waterways and low-lying communities. In the East, thunderstorms are forecast across about 60 percent of the region, with isolated heavy rain expected mainly in Chanthaburi and Trat. Chonburi, including Pattaya, is not among the provinces singled out for heavy rainfall, meaning the city is likely to see only scattered showers mixed with periods of sunshine.
For visitors and businesses, that could be welcome news during the mid-year tourism season, as beach activities and outdoor attractions may still be possible between passing showers. While weather conditions can change quickly, Pattaya is expected to fare better than many other parts of the country facing more severe conditions. At sea, however, authorities are urging caution. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are forecast to reach 2–4 meters, exceeding 4 meters in thunderstorms, while the lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will see waves of 2–3 meters, with higher waves in stormy conditions. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf are advised to remain ashore until July 15.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Bavi, currently northeast of Taiwan, is forecast to make landfall in eastern China between July 11 and 12. The storm is not expected to directly affect Thailand, although travelers heading to the region are advised to monitor weather updates. As much of Thailand prepares for wet weather, Pattaya may once again prove to be one of the country’s hidden bright spots, offering visitors a better chance to enjoy the coast while keeping an eye on changing weather conditions.
