Thailand accelerates OECD accession plans with new government committee

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has established a new Interior Ministry committee to accelerate Thailand’s bid to join the OECD by 2028, aiming to strengthen investment, governance, and economic competitiveness.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has signed an order appointing the Ministry of Interior’s steering committee and subcommittees to drive Thailand’s accession to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). ​Permanent Secretary for Interior Unsit Sampuntharat stated that the committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary, will include relevant government agencies and state enterprises. This initiative supports Thailand’s goal of joining the OECD by 2028, in line with government policy.


​The committee will oversee policy direction, planning, legal and regulatory improvements, and international coordination to strengthen relations and seek support from OECD member countries.

​The Permanent Secretary emphasized that OECD accession is a key national priority, supporting reforms and upgrades in areas such as the economy, laws, governance, investment, competition, innovation, the environment, and public-sector efficiency. This process is expected to boost investor confidence, enhance national competitiveness, reduce regional inequality, strengthen cities and regions, and improve quality of life.

He added that the Ministry of Interior has actively collaborated with the Regional Development Policy Committee (RDPC) through knowledge exchange, policy monitoring, and participation in meetings. These efforts support Thailand’s competitiveness, raise industry and service standards, promote science, research, and innovation diplomacy, help position Thailand in global supply chains, and promote the nation’s creative economy on the world stage.
