SURAT THANI, Thailand – Divers at Koh Tao were treated to an extraordinary marine encounter after whale sharks were spotted at two world-class dive sites on the same day, delighting both Thai and international tourists, July 5. The sightings occurred at Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock, two of the Gulf of Thailand’s most renowned deep-water dive locations situated on opposite sides of Koh Tao. Divers were able to capture photos and video footage of the whale sharks—estimated to be 3–4 metres in length—gliding gracefully through schools of fish.
Tourism operators said the encounter created a memorable experience for divers and reflected the richness of the marine ecosystem surrounding Koh Tao. Ramluek Atsawachin, President of the Koh Tao Tourism Business Association, said the period between June and September is considered peak whale shark season, with frequent sightings reported across multiple dive sites including Chumphon Pinnacle, Sail Rock, White Rock, Twin Peaks, and other surrounding reefs. She noted that in some cases, whale sharks have been seen at more than one dive site on the same day, making the island a highly anticipated destination for divers seeking encounters with the species.
“The consistent presence of whale sharks is an important indicator of marine ecosystem health, food availability, and biodiversity around Koh Tao,” she said, adding that it also reflects long-term conservation efforts by local authorities, dive operators, and the community. Operators urged divers to follow responsible wildlife viewing guidelines, including maintaining distance, avoiding contact, not feeding the animals, and refraining from chasing or disturbing their natural behavior. Koh Tao remains internationally recognized as one of Thailand’s leading diving destinations, with seasonal whale shark sightings continuing to enhance its reputation as a marine tourism hotspot.
