PATTAYA, Thailand – Authorities in Pattaya were alerted on June 30 after beach operators reported a strong fuel-like smell drifting ashore, raising concerns among businesses along the beachfront.

Operators of beach umbrellas and seating areas requested officials to inspect a sand-carrying barge suspected of being the source of the odor. The issue prompted immediate coordination with Pattaya City Municipal Enforcement (Jomtien) and the city’s marine disaster prevention team to investigate the shoreline and nearby waters.

Officials conducted a visual inspection of the beach and surrounding sea area near the sand transport vessel but found no visible oil slick or contamination on the water surface. Authorities subsequently contacted the project contractor responsible for the vessel and instructed them to carry out a more detailed internal inspection of the barge, particularly focusing on fuel handling and engine systems. Officials advised all marine operators to exercise heightened caution in fuel usage and vessel maintenance to prevent potential environmental impact or public concern.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the reported odor.
