CHACHOENGSAO, Thailand – Three Myanmar migrant workers were killed and another man seriously injured following a late-night shooting in Phanom Sarakham district, Chachoengsao province, after a dispute reportedly began over loud music and drinking near a residential area. Police from Phanom Sarakham Police Station were called to an open area in Ban Nong Nam Dam, Koh Khanun subdistrict, shortly before midnight on June 27 after reports of multiple gunshot victims. Officers, forensic investigators, medical personnel, and rescue workers responded to the scene.
Authorities found three deceased Myanmar nationals lying near one another. Each had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Their identities had not yet been officially confirmed. A fourth victim, identified as Pichai, suffered serious injuries after allegedly being struck in the head with a bottle and stabbed in the left side. He was taken to Phanom Sarakham Hospital for emergency treatment. Investigators recovered more than 16 spent 9mm shell casings from the scene, along with a firearm and a knife believed to be connected to the incident.
The alleged shooter, identified as 24-year-old Theerapat, a member of the village security volunteer unit (Chor Ror Bor), told police that several groups of migrant workers, estimated at around 20 people, had gathered nearby for a drinking session and were playing loud music late into the night. According to his statement, he and a friend approached the group to ask them to lower the noise and questioned the use of high-beam vehicle lights in the area. He claimed an argument followed and that his friend was attacked, struck with a bottle, and later chased and stabbed by one of the workers armed with a knife.
Theerapat told investigators he initially fired warning shots but alleged that the group continued advancing. He claimed that as several individuals carrying knives ran toward him, he feared for his safety and fired his weapon in self-defense. Police have not yet confirmed the sequence of events and are continuing to gather evidence, examine forensic findings, and interview witnesses. Investigators are also reviewing whether the use of force was justified and what charges may be filed as the case proceeds. The incident has drawn significant attention due to the high number of casualties and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. (TNA)
