Thai Walailak University breaks into global sustainability top 50

Walailak University has climbed to 47th place worldwide in the 2026 Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings, ranking third among Thai universities and competing against more than 1,600 institutions from 116 countries.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Walailak University has risen to 47th worldwide in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, up from 93rd last year. The university also ranked third among 69 institutions in Thailand and was evaluated alongside 1,646 universities from 116 countries. The rankings assess universities based on their contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Walailak increased its overall score from 89.7 to 92.8 and ranked among the world’s top 30 in four categories: 5th in Gender Equality, 14th in Sustainable Cities and Communities, 23rd in Zero Hunger, and 27th in Life Below Water. Assistant Professor Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, director of the Center for Academic Services, said the university’s progress stems from a long-term approach to sustainable development.



The university also ranked 35th globally in Good Health and Well-Being, 69th in Quality Education, and 73rd in Clean Water and Sanitation. Those results also placed Walailak among Thailand’s top four universities in each of the three categories. According to university officials, the improvement is the result of continued efforts to integrate sustainable development into teaching, research, community engagement, and campus operations. The Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings assess higher education institutions on research, stewardship of resources and people, outreach and engagement with communities, and teaching related to the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. (NNT)
