Authorities say a moderate southwest monsoon is driving widespread rain, with heavier showers expected in Chon Buri, Rayong, Trat, and several southern provinces, along with rough sea conditions.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Bangkok and surrounding provinces continue to face a 70% chance of thunderstorms with isolated heavy downpours this weekend, while parts of the Eastern Region and the lower South are also expected to receive heavy rain. The weather is being driven by a moderate southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, as well as a low-pressure cell over northern Vietnam. Authorities have warned of flash floods and runoff in areas near waterways and low-lying locations where rainfall may accumulate.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), thunderstorms are forecast to cover about 40% of the Northern, Northeastern, and Central regions, while the Eastern Region and both coasts of the South are expected to see thunderstorms in about 60% of their areas. Heavy rain is possible in provinces including Chonburi (Pattaya), Rayong, Trat, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Phuket, and Krabi. Sea conditions are expected to remain moderate. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are forecast at 1 to 2 meters, while waves in the lower Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are expected to average around 1 meter. Waves could exceed 2 meters in areas experiencing thunderstorms, and mariners have been advised to navigate with caution and avoid storm-affected areas. (NNT)
