Thailand has launched a probe into protein shakes amid claims some contain significantly less protein than stated on their labels.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Supamas Isarabhakdi has ordered an investigation into blended chicken breast protein shakes after claims on social media that some products contain protein levels inconsistent with their labels. The Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) and the Food and Drug Administration, Thailand (Thai FDA) have been instructed to examine the allegations and inspect product labels and advertisements. The products are widely consumed by health-conscious individuals, including people who exercise regularly, manage their weight, or monitor their blood sugar levels. Authorities said inaccurate nutritional information could infringe on consumers’ rights and pose risks to people who rely on such products for dietary or medical reasons.

The OCPB has summoned the relevant operators to provide explanations on June 24 and is coordinating with the Thai FDA on further action. Under Thai law, matters involving food labels and claims about nutritional benefits, quality, or health properties fall under the Thai FDA’s jurisdiction, while advertising and sales promotions are overseen by the OCPB. Authorities said products found to contain nutritional content substantially below what is stated on their labels could be classified as adulterated or counterfeit food, carrying penalties ranging from six months to 10 years in prison and fines of 5,000 to 100,000 baht. Consumers have been advised to review labels and nutritional information carefully and retain purchase records and advertisements when possible. Complaints may be submitted through the OCPB Hotline 1166, the OCPB Connect application, the OCPB website, Damrongdhama Centers nationwide, or the Thai FDA Hotline 1556. (NNT)
