The Thai government is warning football fans to be vigilant against World Cup 2026-related scams, including illegal gambling schemes, fake ticket sales, and fraudulent livestream links designed to steal personal and financial information.

PATTAYA, Thailand – The Thai government has issued a warning to football fans to remain alert for online scams exploiting interest in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksmeesangchan said scammers are using the tournament’s popularity to lure victims through illegal online gambling promotions, fake match tickets, fraudulent travel packages, and malicious links claiming to offer free live match streaming or prize giveaways.

According to the government, many of these schemes are designed to steal personal data, banking information, or money from unsuspecting users. Authorities have intensified efforts to combat online crime through the Anti-Online Scam Operation Center (AOC) hotline 1441 and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society. Officials said enforcement actions against illegal gambling and fraudulent websites are continuing nationwide. In May 2026 alone, authorities blocked 78,796 illegal gambling-related URLs as part of efforts to disrupt online criminal networks and reduce the risk of public victimization.

The government is urging the public to follow a simple “4 Don’ts” principle:

  • Don’t click suspicious links.
  • Don’t believe unverified claims.
  • Don’t rush into transactions.
  • Don’t transfer money without verification.

Officials also recommend checking information through trusted sources before making any payments or sharing personal information online. “Football should be a time of enjoyment and celebration,” Ploytalay said. “The government will continue proactive measures against cybercrime while educating the public to recognize scams and safely enjoy World Cup 2026.”
