PATTAYA, Thailand – Visitors to Pattaya and other major tourist destinations across Thailand can now enjoy greater clarity when purchasing alcoholic beverages after authorities officially expanded permitted sales hours nationwide. The change, which took effect on May 29 following publication in the Royal Gazette, allows alcohol sales from 11 a.m. until midnight. The update removes the long-standing uncertainty surrounding the former 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. restriction, a rule that had puzzled many foreign visitors unfamiliar with Thailand’s alcohol regulations.
For years, tourists arriving in Pattaya were often surprised to find themselves unable to purchase beer, wine, or spirits during the afternoon despite restaurants, bars, and convenience stores remaining open. The restriction frequently led to confusion among holidaymakers, particularly those visiting from countries without similar sales limitations. The revised regulations now formally include the afternoon period within normal legal sales hours, simplifying the rules for both visitors and businesses. Tourism operators say the change is likely to improve the overall visitor experience by reducing misunderstandings and eliminating one of the more commonly questioned aspects of Thailand’s alcohol laws. Pattaya, known for its vibrant nightlife, beachside dining, and entertainment districts, is expected to benefit from the streamlined regulations, especially as international arrivals continue to recover and tourism businesses compete for visitors.
Despite the relaxation of daytime sales restrictions, authorities have stressed that existing alcohol-control measures remain in force. The legal drinking age remains 20, and alcohol sales and consumption are still prohibited in certain locations, including temples, government offices, petrol stations, public parks, and public transport areas unless specifically authorized by law. Special restrictions may also continue to apply during elections, major Buddhist holidays, and other periods announced by authorities. Certain venues, including hotels, licensed entertainment establishments, approved event locations, and international airport areas serving overseas passengers, may operate under separate conditions depending on their licenses. Tourism officials continue to encourage responsible drinking and remind visitors to arrange safe transportation after consuming alcohol.
