Authorities are investigating a fatal crash between a freight train and a BMTA bus in Bangkok, with early findings pointing to severe traffic congestion and a delayed railway barrier as key factors.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angsakulkiat has provided a statement on preliminary findings regarding the major collision between a freight train and a Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) air-conditioned bus near the Makkasan Airport Rail Link station on Asoke-Dindaeng Road. The Deputy Minister stated that reports indicate the bus was trapped on the railway tracks due to severe traffic congestion, preventing the automatic crossing barrier from lowering completely. The incoming cargo train, carrying heavy container units, was unable to stop in time, resulting in a violent impact and subsequent fire.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said that the train was traveling from Chachoengsao toward the Bang Sue Grand Station. The impact dragged the bus and caused it to erupt in flames. Emergency responders rapidly transported the injured to nearby medical facilities. The Deputy Transport Minister stated that police will review all evidence and determine legal responsibility. Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana stated that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has been briefed on the incident and has instructed relevant agencies to urgently assist the injured and the families of the deceased, and to conduct a thorough investigation.
