BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Land Bridge project, designating it as a top-priority flagship policy.
This decision follows growing global maritime concerns, including reports that Indonesia may impose transit fees in the Strait of Malacca and ongoing instability in the Middle East.
He noted that navigation through the Strait of Malacca is complex because it requires coordination with Indonesia and Malaysia. He added that this presents a strategic opportunity for Thailand to accelerate the Land Bridge project as an efficient alternative, reducing reliance on the Strait for international sea transport.
The Ministry of Transport confirmed the project’s economic viability, citing strong interest from international firms and investors reviewing investment frameworks. The Land Bridge is expected to strengthen the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) to match the economic level of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).
To ensure smooth operations, the Ministry is carefully planning the route and port locations to avoid maritime disputes, including overlapping territorial waters or unauthorized anchoring. A site visit is scheduled for early May to finalize studies and move the project into implementation. (NNT)
