State Railway of Thailand will begin a six-month pilot feeder service on April 20 using refurbished KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 trains between Don Mueang and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, with links to the Red Line, Don Mueang Airport, and major commuter areas including Thammasat University.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) will launch a pilot feeder service using refurbished “KIHA 40 and KIHA 48” diesel railcars on the Don Mueang–Ayutthaya route, starting April 20, 2026.

SRT Deputy Governor and Acting Governor Anan Phonimdang stated that six of the 20 diesel railcars donated by Japan have been fully refurbished and tested for Thailand’s rail network. These units are ready to operate as a feeder system, offering a high-quality option for commuters and tourists traveling between the capital and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.

The pilot service will run Monday through Friday, offering six round-trips daily for six months and ending on October 31, 2026. The route includes nine stops: Don Mueang, Rangsit, Chiang Rak, Thammasat University, Chiang Rak Noi, Khlong Phutra, Bang Pa-in, Ban Pho, and Ayutthaya.

This feeder line is designed to integrate with Bangkok’s transit network. It connects to the SRT Red Line at Rangsit Station and provides access to Don Mueang International Airport. The service also aims to improve accessibility for Thammasat University (Rangsit Campus) students and residents along the route.

SRT expects at least 1,000 daily passengers during the trial. After the six-month pilot, SRT will review performance data to improve future services and advance its goal of elevating rail transportation into the nation’s primary transportation network. (NNT)
