BANGKOK, Thailand – Bangkok has launched an environmental campaign that unites the public, academic, and community sectors to clean Khlong Saen Saep during the Songkran holidays.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt presided over the closing of a canal-cleanup along Khlong Saen Saep, joined by Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon and Associate Professor Dr. Prinya Thaewananarumitkul, who led faculty and students from Thammasat University’s Faculty of Law.
Participants paddled along Khlong Saen Saeb, collecting refuse from Chidlom Pier to Mahakan Fort. The Governor commended all sides for the participation, stating that these efforts support environmental conservation and increase community awareness of waterway maintenance.
The activity took place during the three-day Songkran holiday from April 13 to 15, when passenger boat services are suspended. This period allowed volunteers to navigate the canal safely and efficiently.
Beyond the physical cleanup, the event is a core component of the “Social Legal Services” course at Thammasat University’s Faculty of Law. The project promotes legal literacy on public waste disposal and wastewater discharge regulations. By engaging residents of the Ban Khrua Tai and Mahanak Mosque communities, the program aims to empower citizens to take an active, sustainable role in preserving the canals.
The Governor emphasized that a clean canal network ultimately benefits residents’ health and improves the quality of life in Bangkok. (NNT)
