PATTAYA, Thailand – Medical experts are warning the public about the dangers of heatstroke as temperatures continue to rise during the hot season, stressing that the condition can quickly become life-threatening if not treated properly.
Dr. Wisutthipong Sawetprasat from Somdet Phra Boromma Ratchathewi Hospital at Sriracha highlighted that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can overwhelm the body’s ability to regulate temperature, leading to a condition known as Heatstroke.
He explained that heatstroke occurs when the body’s internal temperature rises beyond safe levels, causing vital systems to malfunction. Without immediate and proper first aid, the condition can rapidly escalate into a critical medical emergency.
Doctors advise that if someone shows signs of heatstroke, they should be moved to a shaded or well-ventilated area immediately. Giving the person water, cooling the body with damp cloths, and using fans to lower body temperature are key first-response measures.
For those working outdoors or spending extended periods in the heat, precautions are essential. Experts recommend taking frequent breaks in shaded areas, staying hydrated at all times, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Workplaces in high-temperature environments should also ensure proper ventilation to reduce heat buildup.
“Heatstroke is not something to take lightly. Understanding the risks and taking preventive steps early can significantly reduce the danger to life,” Dr. Wisutthipong said.
