Marine Department ramps up safety checks and crowd control at piers across the country as hundreds of thousands of passengers travel by boat during Songkran, with strict rules in place for operators and zero tolerance for alcohol use.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Marine Department reported increased passenger turnout at piers and waterways during the Songkran holidays and has strengthened safety measures for water transportation nationwide.

In the Bangkok metropolitan area, the Department is conducting safety surveillance through CCTV systems at key piers along the Chao Phraya River and Saen Saeb Canal. Officers are stationed at various locations to provide travel information and manage passenger flow. Boat captains have been instructed to navigate cautiously and comply with speed limits.

In other regions, service points have been set up at major tourist piers. The Department requires operators and captains to verify the readiness of vessels, docks, and life-saving equipment before each trip. A zero-tolerance policy for alcohol and narcotics is enforced, with mandatory screenings for boat controllers. Operators must also monitor weather advisories from the Thai Meteorological Department and official marine notices.

On April 12, nationwide water transport statistics recorded 5,401 boat trips serving a total of 279,317 passengers. Due to the high volume of travelers, all personnel have been directed to operate at full capacity. The public is encouraged to report unsafe activities or emergencies through the 1199 Hotline, available 24 hours a day. (NNT)
