The Joint Information Center on the Thailand–Cambodia Situation says Thai forces remain within agreed positions under border committee frameworks in Surin’s Chong Chom area, stressing the deployment is a defensive security measure targeting cross-border threats and transnational crime activities.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Joint Information Center on the Thailand–Cambodia Situation has issued a clarification regarding allegations of a Thai troop presence in the Chong Chom border area in Surin province. Authorities said Thai forces remain within positions agreed upon under the General Border Committee framework and have not expanded or altered deployment lines.

Officials stated that the troop presence is a security measure in response to cross-border threats, not an attempt to enforce law outside national jurisdiction. The area had been used as a base for activities affecting Thailand’s security, leading to actions described as defensive, limited, and preventive, without asserting control over another country’s territory.

Thailand continues to address the situation through bilateral mechanisms, including the Regional Border Committee, the General Border Committee, and the Joint Boundary Commission, as well as ongoing communication between the two sides.

The statement also cited evidence found in the area, including large numbers of foreign SIM cards, multilingual scam materials, and infrastructure linked to large-scale cybercrime operations. Thai officials, with information pointing to the area’s use as a hub for transnational crime, call for continued cooperation between countries while countering misinformation. (NNT)
