Human remains found on stricken Thai cargo ship after Strait of Hormuz attack

Salvage teams inspect the damaged Thai-flagged vessel Mayuree Naree after it was hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, where human remains have now been discovered amid fire-ravaged sections of the ship.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed on Friday that human remains have been discovered aboard the Thai-flagged cargo vessel “Mayuree Naree,” which which was struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz last month.

The discovery follows a second search operation by specialized salvage teams hired by the ship’s owner, Precious Shipping. The team conducted a thorough search of all accessible areas, despite extensive fire damage and flooding in the engine room and adjacent compartments.

The MFA stated that while partial human remains were located in the damaged sections of the ship, identification has not yet been confirmed. The families of the three missing Thai crew members have been notified of the development.

“The Ministry expresses its deepest condolences regarding this development,” the MFA, adding that it is coordinating with relevant Thai embassies and Iranian authorities to expedite the identification process.



The “Mayuree Naree” encountered the incident on March 11, 2026, while transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Following the discovery, the Thai government called on all parties to return to diplomatic negotiations to ease regional tensions and ensure the safety of civilian maritime navigation in accordance with international law.
