PATTAYA, Thailand – As Songkran approaches, debate among foreign visitors and long-term residents is intensifying, with opinions sharply split over whether to embrace or avoid Pattaya during the extended water festival—typically held from April 17–19, but in some years stretching into nearly 10 days of non-stop celebrations.
For some, the solution is simple—stay out of it.
“Smart people stock up and hibernate for a week,” one commenter wrote, reflecting a growing group of long-term visitors who choose to avoid the chaos altogether. Others noted that while some communities limit celebrations to a single day, Pattaya’s version can stretch well beyond a week, making it difficult to escape getting soaked at any time of day—or night.
“It used to be fun,” another long-term resident commented, recalling when Songkran lasted just a few days nationwide. “Now it’s unpredictable… you can’t even go out for dinner without getting drenched.”
Yet not everyone is complaining.
Many still embrace the festival’s spirit, sharing personal stories of how confusion turned into appreciation. One visitor recalled being soaked during their first trip in the 1990s—initially frustrated, but eventually learning to enjoy the tradition and now looking forward to it every year.
Others take a more direct stance toward critics.
“Don’t like it, don’t come,” appeared repeatedly across discussions, with some defending Songkran as a core part of Thai culture that visitors should accept rather than criticize.
The debate also touched on safety concerns, with some commenters pointing to drink driving and road accidents during the holiday, calling for stricter enforcement and better public awareness.
At the same time, not all reactions were serious—some leaned into the playful chaos, joking about preparing water guns and looking forward to soaking others, while others dismissed complaints entirely, telling critics to “grow up” and join the fun.
The mixed reactions highlight a deeper divide among foreign visitors in Pattaya—between those who see Songkran as an unforgettable cultural celebration, and those who feel the city’s extended, high-intensity version has gone too far.
For travelers, the message is clear: Pattaya during Songkran is not for everyone. You either embrace it fully—or plan to stay dry somewhere else.
