Paraj Ratanajaipan warns Thai maritime operators to exercise extreme caution after the Royal Thai Navy issued a security advisory about a high risk of sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Oman amid escalating regional tensions.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has issued an urgent security advisory to Thai maritime operators, warning of the possible deployment of sea mines in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz amid rising regional tensions.

Royal Thai Navy spokesperson Rear Admiral Paraj Ratanajaipan stated that the Maritime Traffic Control Center issued an updated security notice on March 13, 2026. The advisory urges commercial vessels to exercise maximum caution after a security assessment found a high probability of sea mines in these key shipping lanes.

To ensure the safety of maritime personnel and assets, the Maritime Traffic Control Center recommends that all Thai vessels avoid entering high-risk areas unless absolutely necessary. Shipping companies and vessel owners are advised to conduct thorough risk assessments and strengthen security measures in line with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code and Best Management Practices (BMP). Continuous monitoring of updates and strict compliance with maritime safety agency directives are critical during this period of increased risk.

Operational protocols during transit must include maintaining constant radio communication on Maritime Band Channel 16 and being ready to respond promptly to local maritime security forces. Crews should immediately report any suspicious objects or unusual activities to the Maritime Traffic Control Center, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), or other relevant authorities.

The Royal Thai Navy has also released technical guidelines for navigating areas where sea mines may be present. These protocols help crews reduce risks and improve safety while transiting contested waters. The Navy is monitoring the situation continuously and will provide immediate updates to protect Thai seafarers and maritime interests. (NNT)
