BANGKOK, Thailand – The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) has launched an urgent investigation into alleged irregularities in Chonburi’s District 1 following public concerns over the security of ballot boxes.
The controversy began during the consolidation phase, a standard procedure where officials transfer ballots from multiple polling stations into single containers for long-term storage. While the EC clarified that boxes were securely sealed with adhesive tape after security ties were removed, the process sparked a standoff with local observers, leading to a freeze on all ballot movement in the area.
A central investigative team has been dispatched to the site, with a formal conclusion on the matter expected within 48 hours.
During a press briefing, the EC emphasized that local officials do not have the legal authority to order a recount independently, as such a mandate rests solely with the central commission in Bangkok. For now, the disputed ballot boxes remain under strict police guard at the Chonburi Municipal badminton court to ensure transparency.
Addressing concerns over potential tampering, the EC maintained that the official tallies posted at individual polling stations serve as the definitive record and cannot be altered. While unofficial electronic results may show minor fluctuations during the data entry process, the agency assured the public that the final, certified results will undergo rigorous verification to maintain the integrity of the election.
