Officials inspect a pier of the Bhumibol Bridge after a fire incident, as the Department of Rural Roads confirms the structure remains safe and that damage was limited to surface concrete, contrary to unverified claims circulating on social media.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Department of Rural Roads (DRR) has clarified social media reports alleging extensive fire damage to a pier of the Bhumibol Bridge, confirming that the structure remains safe and that the claims are inaccurate. The reports cited unverified statements attributed to a crane service provider and included references to liability, detention, high damage estimates, crane rental costs, and assertions that a large portion of the pier had been damaged.

The department said the information circulating online is based on hearsay and has not been confirmed by responsible authorities. Preliminary engineering inspections found that the damage was limited to the concrete surface layer in areas directly affected by the fire.

After the damaged surface concrete was removed, inspections confirmed that the internal concrete core retains compressive strength consistent with the original design. The bridge remains structurally sound and safe for normal use, with no risk to the public. Legal proceedings related to responsibility for the incident are ongoing, and no official conclusions have been announced.

The department added that repair costs are lower than figures reported online. A detailed assessment is underway, and repairs will proceed in line with engineering standards. The public has been advised to rely on official government sources, with further updates to be issued as verified information becomes available. (NNT)
